Works

When I walk across the basalt soil of my home, I connect with a time long past of volcanic lava and ash that once covered the land. Rocks with surface holes from the expulsion of gas and deep black soil that holds the carbon of the past fires remain.

Here the ancestors of the First Nations walked these hills for 50,000 years leaving their presence in every natural form. In this time of modern humanity that is insignificant in duration but significant for the damage made to the natural world, I walk, I draw, I make and I search for the essence of my origin, for connection to the living earth.

Through my practice I seek to discover a relationship with nature that goes beyond physical form. Each time I work with the soil, it yields new ways to express the wonder of the universe and the innate beauty of the land.

The works I make seek both the infinite and the transient. They express the volcanic formation, the entropy of weathering and the ever-present vital energy of nature. They connect with the cycles of growth and decay, the changing of the seasons, the movement of the skies, the many hidden elements deep within the ground. Through the ceramic process, reversal of the entropic disorder occurs through the applied thermal energy, creating new microstructures and unexpected results of singular beauty and expression.
