Trace 2023
Stone-fired raku clay with blacksoil glaze - 3 pieces 40cmx20cmx0.4cm approximately
Trace seeks to express both strength and fragility of the land, building an interactive connection between artist and earth. Natural tempering and constant change feature in the works, expressing time in place. Successive firings produce changing results generated by uncontrolled natural material in the ceramic process. The work is practice-led, experimental and creatively evolving as each result stimulates further experimentation.
The experimental glazes feature found soils from Peter’s studio location on the Southern Darling Downs. Washed black soils that are rich in silica and carbon and related fine weathered basalt gravels have been blended with small amounts of glaze materials to create rich expressive finishes. Colour and texture are varied by changing the mix proportions and introduction of additional small amounts of oxides and carbonates that are present naturally in the soils.
