Blacksoil 2022-23
Stone-fired raku clay with black-soil glazes
These works progressively explore the application of experimental glazes on the horizontal surface. The glazes crystallise and form a rich surface that gives expression to the relationship between artist and natural material.
The work Depth explores the folding down of a clay surface during the firing to 1260°C, creating a hollow in which different glazes have been applied.
The works that follow Depth show bio-graphical marking across the black soil glaze, expressing the movement of life across the natural world.
